Good to know the universe doesn't get in the way of political expediency..

"Asked by reporters how legislation would prevent users simply moving to encryption software not controlled by tech companies, Turnbull said Australian law overrode the laws of mathematics.

“The laws of Australia prevail in Australia, I can assure you of that. The laws of mathematics are very commendable, but the only laws that applies in Australia is the law of Australia.”

Hilarious.

We do live in an era where if some crazy person can charm or convince the majority of the population that they are right, then that crazy person could be spouting that 1 + 1 = 4 for all we care and they would be unfortunately upheld as being correct.

We say you're entitled to your opinion, but not your own facts, but some of our "world leaders" beg to differ...

Watching Wimbledon tennis. Some great matches this year. Konta didn't put up much of a challenge to Williams last night and she was very rude in just storming off after the match and not following Wimbledon traditions by waiting for the other player and leaving together.

What a simply fabulous job the ball boys and girls* do and have done for many years. Excellent.

Most annoying thing is the coughpy Blackmores' ads for garbage vitamins and such. One has to watch broadcast delayed so one can FF through this merde.

(*or whatever's the correct term these days)

Great news. Conrats. So now that trip can be written off against tax? ;)

Yes .. but judiciously only partly claimed. I actually do have a history research business.

As little long as you got your references correct and cited one of the examiners, you'll be fine.:)

Yes for the first, no for the second  . Not yet into the super's field. Mind you, I did take the precaution of buying today's meeting lunch.

Interesting fact I did not know no 51324.

"The States" shall mean such of the colonies of New South Wales, New Zealand, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia, and South Australia, including the northern territory of South Australia, as for the time being are parts of the Commonwealth, and such colonies or territories as may be admitted into or established by the Commonwealth as States; and each of such parts of the Commonwealth shall be called "a State".

Section 6,
Preamble to the Australian Constitution

But irrelevant in the current context.

1981 no-name dryer still going strong, shame the white plastic door is now yellow though!

I'm still using:
clothes dryer - 1977
food processor - 1978
microwave oven - circa 1980
gas oven - 1987

just replaced washing machine and fridge freezer last year rather than get them repaired.

Also my dog lasted 18 years !

are these records :)

Seriously, what's going on with reporters spell check this week?

Noticed something on a Brisbane and the SMH yesterday and now this.

Even worse, the Herald sun misspelled their own url so links to stories didn't work properly yesterday.

The joys of waking up at 3am, all my laundry and shopping is done, dinner for tonight (ham & pea soup in the slow cooker) and lunch for tomorrow (fried chicken marinated in buttermilk and hot sauce) is prepped. Even found beef brisket at the butchers so thats a slow cooker dinner for during the week!

Can anyone help me find a TR that mentions a ryokan on an island in Japan. Someone stayed there with their family in the past year - 2 or 3 kids and adults??
The family stayed there for one night, had a traditional dinner.

i am trying to find the name of the ryokan and the location. TIA!

What sort of island, big (Okinawa, beaches, diving and military) or small (Miyajima, train and ferry ride from Hiroshima)? What was the attraction to the island?

I knew we'd agree on something :).

He says that since he left NZ at 3, he was unaware that he was a NZ citizen. If you are a dual citizen, surely you have dual tax obligation when you become an adult .. pay tax in 1 country and satisfy the other country that you had satisfied the tax treaty obligations. Or do the kiwis just 'lose' citizens?

I do have a deal of schadenfreude on this. The Greens being so sanctimonious about when something like this happens to other politicians and all that.

Just heard on the radio him giving a bit of a verbal finger to the proposition that he should repay his "inappropriately"-gotten gains. Of course! ... its easy being Green  .

Generally you don't have to pay income tax in another country if you're a resident in another country. Notable exception, US citizens over a certain pay grade or Australians with a HECS debt.

Funny you can't be a dual citizen in Federal parliament, but our head of state is British.

When the original roads were being named for Canberra, Wellington Ave was part of the plan. At that time it looked like New Zealand (and Fiji) would be part of the Commonwealth of Australia. As NZ and Fiji decided not to join, the road was renamed as Canberra Ave.

Generally you don't have to pay income tax in another country if you're a resident in another country. <snip>.

In my experience, you do. I was resident and working in Canada for a few years. I had to pay Canadian Provincial and Federal income tax on my earnings there. I still had to file an Australian income tax return and in my case for two years I paid a small top-up as the ATO thought I hadn't been bled enough on my Canadian pay. Because the Canadian tax year is calendar, and the Australian one is 'Financial', the lags (especially between Quebec and Canadian Federal income tax interaction, but also between them and Australia) were up to 18 months, I was still filing triple returns for 2 years after I came back to Australia.

Given discussion a while back I thought people might get a chuckle out of this one...

Yesterday I learnt that Copenhagen's green carbon neutral policy has nothing to do with a laneway called Green Light District. Well, I guess it's green and possibly organic but also a street of pop ups dedicated to the sale of all things pot! Completely illegal and controlled by gangs. And the aggressive 'no photos' as I innocently thought what a cute name and tried taking a photo as I approached the street by a guy in black sunnies, did not alert me to all the variations of pot that are available. Not even the smell was a giveaway.

We departed after seeing all the gang members controlling the sales I was then concerned that we'd both absorbed the smell on our clothing when we tried entering the ship. What a fun day it was.
