The totally off-topic thread

Happens a lot in the IT industry too. Software and IT items are enhanced to the point where no one wants to use them anymore.
Well that’s put it all totally out of context.

.....In fact, people should put up 10-20m high wind generation towers in their backyards too, to generate even more renewable energy. What's wrong with that?

The neighbour from my kitchen window already has 3 or 4 ham operator dish thingies (each new one gets bigger!) - how will he talk to aliens if he makes room for a wind generator ;)

The other impending crisis is the tightening supply of Rare Earths. Over 90% of the worlds supply is in China and China knows it.

One reason it is not developed in other countries is because it’s extraction is environmentally damaging and polluting. So close down the US rare earths mines and just buy it. “Out of sight out of mind?”

What are rare earths used for?

Among other things:
Magnets - electric cars, wind turbine
Display screen panels - smart phones tv computers.

How will he talk to aliens if he does not have power.

Actually he would be the epitome of the “off gridder “:)

All this talk about risk/reward (well, my talk, anyway) got me a little teary ... fondly remembering the good old days of Poseidon and Tasminex ... and Bre-X! When I get home tomorrow I'll dig out my Bre-X share certificate and post a pic.

Here 'tis:

My BIL was a SAHD (stay at home dad). He took his kids to a playgroup and due to his eargerness to play with the kids the other mums left him to it and withdrew to their own little group.
After I had Master FM, Mr FM stayed at home as well and we shared all the kid stuff - playgroup, pre school and later reading at school etc. he mainly did canteen as I didn’t like it. He seemed to particularly like the Christmas dinner out with all the canteen Mums :).

Damned hippies :)

I think hes taken ownership of Creepy Cat because I see him/her hanging out at their place, playing in the knee high grass.

This neighbour also NEVER closes their back door, even in winter. Ive lived here for 20yrs, rarely ever see them but hubby says most nights about 3am he sees/hears him talking on the radio thingy (from our kitchen window, which overlooks their yard. We're not being creepy and spying).

Further details on the Hospital blackout continue to emerge. The hospital uses robots extensively to deliver food and records. They come from Germany. When the hospital blacked out the robots went into meltdown and reverted to their original programming and were sending out the message ‘achtung achtung’ which is their default error message.

Hope you diesel price is not too high

 Dont know what worries me more, robots delivering food trays or the shouting of Achtung? What happens to dementia patients that dont eat their food, which Ive seen? Do they just fade away because no one notices they dont eat?

If they were going back and forwards into walls would at least be funny but Achtung is disturbing.

Yes, they did that too and were bumping in to each other.

Taught my husband how to use a sandwich press the other day, ie turn it on, place sandwich, lower top of maker. He was shocked by how simple it was

I hope he feels the same way, when I introduce him to the vacuum cleaner.

Mr FM did all the cooking for roughly 30 years. (Including using a bread maker and an ice cream maker). Then I bought a Thermomix and now he claims it is too scary for him to use.....

In our house vacuum cleaner is used thus:

Bring out the vacuum cleaner
Turn it on
Turn off after 5 min
Leave it where you turned it off

I for one, welcome our new robot overlords.

Robots - so high tech it must be great hospital food.
Funny you should mention that. The Govt showed prototypes of the food to be served a few months ago. Classic McDonalds Yum promo photos versus slop actually served. Of course there are some who say you cant expect high standard food in Hospital but on the other hand people do need to eat nourishing food. I was in the old RAH and didnt eat anything - family brought in the food. I hate stewed fish and was not given a choice. Just dumped on the table. The intellectually challenged girl opposite me was less discrete. She said she wouldn't eat that "cough" and I just nodded when the nurse asked me about it.
I feel your state's pain, but Jay Wetherill sure does a lot to entertain the rest of us:).

Do you think that if he and his government spent more time on the basics of good government, rather than pursuing the compost economy, the population may have a better go of it?

Now I hear Wetherill and co are complaining about the latest health finding offer from the feds. Memo Jay - the robots are calling for you.
I dont know, I think they were surprised they won the last election. I think they've lost their way as would any Govt after 16 years. Life sentence that! Well, they didnt win last time by First preference votes and the majority (53%) voted for the other side but electoral boundaries and deals done secured them for another 4 years. Those boundaries have changed now.

If we lose what our Govt think is our fair share of GST (and the rest of Oz thinks is unfair) then we lose a lot of money in future from the Feds but Turnbull wont announce that until after the state election in March. Fair play that, as this Govt did not announce the sale of Daw Park Rehab Hospital (the main Veterans Hospital) until 2 days after the by-election in that very electorate. A few years previously Labor had previously announced that a Labor Govt would never sell the Repat Hospital. Pretty pathetic.

But we have Nick X. its a bit like Trump really, voters are sick to death of our current batch of Libs and Labors; theyve created a vacuum and Nick has swept in. But he has no policies. His first announcement if he does a deal with either Lib or Lab to get the numbers - a Royal Commission into our Health System. Utterly stupid. We need a fix now, not a ridiculously expensive RC that only makes lawyers rich, will take years and years and everything will have changed in the meantime.
