The totally off-topic thread

i think it is better than when it is was in the 80s before the outsourcing started. There were some horror stories we heard about projects that were never completed and went around in circles.

Definite improvements from those days and there are some quite big and sophisticated systems around. Management and control can be quite poor. There are also some outstanding public service managers who make things happen - you can see the difference in their areas. Sometimes a big outsourcer will win a major project and staff it with low quality people to maximise profits - just an accident waiting to happen.

I don’t think it is about privatising or not privatising but more about control - even where you have a project totally outsourced you still have to make sure they are delivering as promised. For all that there are penalties put into contracts, I can count on one hand the number of times there has been any comeback for stuffing up a project.

After 30 years working as an IT contractor in the public service and then supplying people in my business I had my “good” and “bad”. departments. Defence and ATO were usually just plain bad - the culture never improved Immigration and Customs (now combined) usually did a good job of managing their IT. Socials was OK in the early days but since becoming part of the mega human services has very much lost its way.

Where privatising has worked, is that it has attracted a skill set to Canberra that they just couldn’t get, although that has watered down over the years, as public servants swap to be contractors, so you just pay more for the same people. I suppose you could argue without the ability to pay them more, they would leave and go to private enterprise in Sydney.

One thing I have noticed is that a public servant who becomes a contractor generally develops a better work ethic. Not always true of course. The better managers will ensure that they get rid of any contractors who aren’t delivering, but that doesn’t always happen either.

You also see jobs for mates and rates for mates. We had one person we put into a position who was being sold for around $100 per hour. Within a few years they had managed to get that rate doubled. Just insane.

See similar over here in the UK too, been having a little sniff at the market and have been approach by a lot of the big Indian outsourcing companies, however for a programme manager role they're offering well below market rates. I have great pleasure in telling them good luck and they will get what they pay for with that kind of day rate!

I remember sitting in a cafe, listening in on a interview next to the me. Foreign interviewee, uni degree, global experience plus the usual SAP, cisco, sql ect qualifications and salary offer was $50K.

Our 40th wedding anniversary and birthday plan in June went down the toilet with the train strike planned on that day. We were going to Reims and had booked and paid a deposit for a private champagne tour. Currently negotiating what to do next with the Tour Company. We already have a Giverny Versailles tour booked, on a bus, so that’s safe.

40 years, wow! Amazing! Congrats! If there's one thing you can rely on in this world..... it's the French striking :(

What about hiring a car and driving (although you obviously cannot imbibe.. but why not stay a night instead?).

And my first Airtasker activity just tanked also. Had booked someone for Monday and Tuesday to lay tiles in laundry. (MrP posted a photo of me dismantling laundry on Facebook this morning but that’s another story.). Everyone knows there is a specific order of tradies involved and tiles need to sit for 24 hours undisturbed but they need to go in before cabinetry. Which needs to go in after tiles.

This week is complicated with me having to be in Mel on thurs and fri and next week with PH mid week. Anyways, confirmed last Tuesday for start tomorrow which meant me moving out laundry on weekend and removing existing tiles. And had booked plumber (2 visits pre and post cabinet), cabinet delivery and cabinet installer for next Monday week through Thursday week (after PH).

Messaged Airtasker first thing Sat to ask what time Monday. He messaged back just now, sorry, can’t make it tomorrow but hopefully Tuesday. Nup. Too late. I’d laid the original tiles 14 years ago so off to Bunnings to buy the tools etc for tile cutting. I’ll cancel the job tomorrow night if I’m going ok. I’ll know by then. I’ve also let Airtasker now it’s a tomorrow start because of other tradies. Will see what happens.

I really don’t feel old enough to be married for 40 years. MrP has found a Lido birthday dinner and show that looks Parisian. It’s off Champs Élysées. Hopefully Uber is working. The trains won’t be. We are looking at one of those Citroen tours too.

How frustrating! I find the same in the UK too, for small jobs tradies are very unreliable. We've found a good few though, so use them a lot and pay them what they're worth.

Sounds very cool for your anniversary, Uber should be grand in Paris - never had any issues there myself.

Yes a bit of investment in the future Flashback.
Time seems to fly for us as we have been married over 44 years now.

Oh what a pain! But look on the bright side....when I started to read the first sentence of your post I thought you had had to call the whole trip off.
