As much fun as last month was, I’d also like to catch an earlier train :p
It is much more fun running to make the last train of the night with a belly full of alcohol and getting there with 1 minute to spare. ;)

Enjoying the free wi -fi on UK trains why don't we have that ?

We have enough problems getting our trains to run on time (and no one make a joke about wheels).

Congrats! I’m a little further away at 50SC, but with this latest sale, might speed up the inevitable…

and how would they recover that level of expenditure (through ticketing increases), even over the effective lifespan of the wi-fi technology...are they facing into a stiff breeze with a full bladder :D

Queensland has whittled down its list of potential suppliers (to) Dimension Data, Wellard Technlogies and Fujitsu... A winner is expected to been selected by August with trials to begin in October.
I wonder who was the lucky tenderer

But before internet access is even considered the state's first goal is to establish a system to monitor commuters
even with my extremely limited knowledge on computers, don't envy the project team. Buy access using time or download basis?

I bet you dont see it for a long time, I had a look at the economics of covering the 360km of track with WIFI, I thinks its $80M of access points to be effective?

I don't think that is their plan. The plan is to install new security cameras onboard trains which stream live video back to HQ. As part of that, they want to provide wi-fi onboard the trains for customer use. So it wouldn't be too much cost wise (for the access points etc - one per carriage?), but the data would presumably be a huge cost. Maybe there's a cost effective solution? WIMAX???

Anyways, it would be interesting to see what the short-listed vendors have come up with.

WIFI mesh is the only option, WIMAX wont handle the mobility and bandwidth for 80-160 cameras streaming live even with H264 compression from one train, and thats assuming the spectrum is available for WIMAX, neither the shortlisted tenders nor the government have the spectrum (interestingly the Fujitsu Chairman is Ted Pretty who also chairs Allegro which does have 3.4GHz spectrum). Even if they did do WiMAX after overcoming spectrum and bandwidth issues, it still will be close to $80M in infrastructure, and thats with the fibre already in the ground.

Thanks for the info. I thought WIMAX was a possibility for that type of usage. It will be *very* interesting to see what they come up with. I'm sure it would be a typical Blight special - less than promised, late, over budget etc.

When I first asked the question I was just mildly curious, now I'm very intrigued.

I'm intrigued because I can't find any limitation on under 18os joining. But I assume it must be there because of the bar service.
