I'm starting to wonder whether accepting an invitation to a wedding in Brisbane in March was a good idea now, hope the weather improves before March 26:!::p

I wish we took a similar approach for people wanting to fly.

I was mentioning to people before that in my industry - mining - even visitors need to undertake relatively stringent induction processes to understand (read: coerce) all of their OHS rights and responsibilities. Sometimes they need to take a test for competence with respect to these. The processes could take a few minutes or a few days. And repeat visits do not necessarily result in not having to go through the process again, let alone a shorter version.

Why can't we take the same approach with people flying so we don't end up with so many airheads (no pun intended) that have little regard for the health and safety procedures within an aircraft?

Man, you put a lot of faith in the visitor induction. I can name a mine site where it is just a joke. I wrote the script for a big chunk of the visitor induction video. I worked all over the site everyday for a number of years. After a break I'm going back to the site every few months as a visitor and first they make me watch the video everytime, then the video has been updated for a revised policy that is different to the "correct" answer for the induction test. The induction test also has wrong "correct" answers for OHS questions. Not to mention that after doing the video 3 times I know the answers to the induction test and don't even have to watch the video. All this waste of time, just to sit on a bus for 30 minutes and then spend a day in meetings. Also being escorted by a goose who hasn't spend more than 3 hours actually getting out into the workplace. Never put on their PPE in anger and all that.

Frankly, this can work if done properly and maintained and updated. But the fact is that people are too lazy, cheap and incompetent to do the things required to make this stuff work.

Brisbane has apparently been battered by yet another severe storm today, hope all AFF members up there are ok.

Well, about as much faith as I have that an open license is a certification that someone is not a complete nut behind the wheel. Oh wait a minute.......

You should probably PM me the name of the site you speak of. Either (a) I've been to it, and/or (b) I'll be having a stern word about it to our mining health & safety research centre!

Not that it matters a whole lot. The odd thing about the mining industry is that you can do everything possible except put people in a cage so that they are aware not to hurt or maim themselves. But if they do and even if you can prove it's their fault, you're still screwed.

That's probably one of the only industries where such is the case. Perhaps the only other ones are the other extractive industries (oil & gas), and chemical industries.

In theory, the workplace is safer with these new kinds of procedures. Sure, we still kill people every year and that's nothing at all to be proud of. But it's better than it was several decades ago when the death toll was orders of magnitude higher.

For my own sake I'd rather have the stupid induction and test than none at all.

Actually - i would say bundy did it himself. Probably to differentiate between himself and fuzzyaus.

I remember Bundy Bear having reservations about being called his malapropistic alias. He could've chosen many other pictures.... and yes some that would have the eponymous liquor in it...

Ah, so I'll guess you work at the JK centre then.

I think I gave the wrong impression about visitor inductions sure they are good for the one off visitor. Even when the person marking the test has different answers to what's on the video and comments that everyone gets that question wrong

But they are nothing like a driver's licence. The visitor still has to be escorted they are not let loose on the site. A visitor induction is certainly not saving lives, the worker induction and training does that, along with good management.

OHS laws apply to all workplaces so it is hard to see that the situation in the case of a death is unique for mining. In fact, I've heard of deaths where the mine has completely got off, even through they carry a major part of the blame - almost sending the person to their death.

Good spotting, at least someone was paying attention; and yes you are correct on one of the reasons for the change.

Just in the process of changing a few things, phone, computer, internet passwords lots of stuff so I thought an interim change of picture would be good.
