Upgrade confirmed in morning, but cancelled on check-in

Qantas may think they have won out of this with their (in my opinion) rather paltry goodwill gesture of points, but if the OP is now booking and paying for J class flights with *A AC/UA/SQ and maybe VA )or using AAdvantage as others have suggested) then I would not call that a win for QF, that is a high value customer served up on a plate to Qantas competitors..... thats still a fail / own goal in my books.

Note that there was still no explanation for the downgrade from Qantas either so there is no real way that the OP knows that QF has even identified or indeed corrected whatever the problem was.

Given the overall service on AC & UA I am pretty sure he will be coming back to QF again

As for the explanation of the downgrade, as I said quite a few times you were never going to get the exact reason from QF

If QF took paid business customer/s over a points upgrade then, once again, good on them!

OK, this is why I like and hate EU261.

Points fares are treated like payed fares. So under EU261 the OP would have full rights:
- Rebooked on the next flight (any carrier) in the same COS
- Refund of the fare difference (full payed fare) + Cash Compensation

So a nice little earner for 20k points but I still would upset.

On the other hand QF compensated me very generously when I was caught in the industry action. So it may be worth to escalate a little complaint.

Why I hate it: Most EU Airlines ignore it. So you have to have a good lawyer to get the compensation, you are legally entitled to.

Probably a CL rocked up and made demands. Instead of your $80-90k, their's might have been $80-90m. That said, they would most likely have already purchased J unless perhaps they had J without a reservation for that service.

QANTAS is a class system in every sense of the term.

Every sympathy with you.

OK, had an almost the same story yesterday from BKK...
Was at Conrad enjoying my last day at BKK, got an email from Expedia saying points upgrade for me and mrs were successful. Happy, excited, and went to login to QF account, saw 2A & 2B, Business Confirmed (U). All looked great, a perfect ending journey back after a humid and hot holiday in Thai.
OK, had no idea why but checked the status again on the Airport Express (maybe this is the cause???), noticed the old 24A & 24B were back on Checkmytrip. A bit worried, but thought may because of CMT not synchronised yet? Logged into QF again on my iPhone, same seats, now very disappoint...
At BKK checkin counter, asked what happened to my request, the only answer was "The upgrade was declined and the flight was full, may be next time, sir?"
Of course I knew the flight was full...
Only difference to OP is my points never deducted from my account, nor had I ever seen a waitlist line showing.
I had a brief moment thinking I should approach to pax on 2A & 2B and asked them how did they secure the two seats, lol, how mad i was then?
Now sitting at QC Sydney waiting for my flight back to MEL, and full work/meeting in the arvo...

I'm very sorry it happened to you too. If they never raised our hopes, we wouldn't be so disappointed.

This QF Gold Status isn't worth the plastic it's written on. :(

I thought this bit was rather odd too... Never knew Expedia allowed you to upgrade on their site, only on QF direct.

Nah, the points upgrade request was made on QF site.
I think Expedia had a system to check any changes happened on the booking, and will send out email notifications.
Such as flight time change, or in this case an upgrade.

It may be that the wait listed segment triggered their system, but QF yield quickly removed that segment when those higher on the pecking order were processed.

I wouldn't trust anything in email from Expedia on upgrades.

The OP had a legitimate gripe getting a text from QF and having Confirmed in their booking. Yours sounds like an Expedia issue, not QF.

Well I had thought about the same. The Expedia email was at around 3am local time.
I checked manage my booking on QF site at 10am, 12pm twice, both were showing business confirmed. (I should take a screenshot then...)
I was able to select seats on QF then, although no empty seats available to choose.

I would have been doing OLCI in that circumstance - printing to a .pdf and emailing it to myself if no printer available ...

What fare bucket were you originally booked into in the whY cabin eg N, E, O, Q?

If you booked through Expedia BR it's likely that it was a fare that was not eligible for upgrade anyway unless there was a promotion on at the time that deemed all whY fares eligible for points upgrades.

What date did you make the booking & request the upgrade?

So there was no sms notification from QF at any time saying your upgrade request was successful?

You can't just assume that whoever ended up in 2AB was an points upgraded pax at ypur expense. Strange as it nay seem, not everyone pre-allocates their seats - even in J so they could've been pax who paid for a DONE4 & were allocated those seats at the airport.

When you know you have to work on the day you arrive back from a trip it's always wise to assume you will be travelling in the cabin as ticketed.

Yep, I had tried... Was told not eligible for OLCI, need to check in at the counter.

It's S fare (don't ask me why I purchased such a fare from BR site, I know it's stupid), so definitely it's upgradable.
Can't remember the exact time, but it's must be sometime last late Nov/ early Dec.
No idea about sms notification as I switched to a Thai sim card.

Yep, I was joking about the 2A & 2B seat part, but jealousy indeed, lol.

And I'm sure I will have more thinking about the strategy of those points in the future, and thanks for your suggestion :)
