I question the sanity of hoarding over 1M QFF points given how much uncertainty there is over the future of QFi too. ;)

Fair enough.
I prefer to burn my QFF points on some RTWs rather then x2 classic awards to TPE.

The missus didn't mind all the flights but she was puzzled as to why we are flying *A when we have over 1M QFF points. I tried to explain the GUM deal but she just brushed me off and said I'm crazy :)

I bet the taxes QF charges for a similar itinerary probably would have costed more than the entire F trip using USDM ;)

BKK ICN J
ICN SPN J
SPN ICN J

nice one, you going to stay at the Hyatt in SPN? I'm doing a very similar trip in december (stop over in Japan on the way home instead of HKG)

I'm only on the ground for approx 15 hours with a 0150 arrival so not sure who will accommodate me yet! :) Haven't been to HKG before so looking forward to that. The in-laws are down to see my wife over easter... so I thought I'd go away! ;)

Recently married and already getting away without her? (Don't worry, my insatiable need to travel did the same to me ;))

Not sure I could get away with that! ;) Last year every public holiday weekend I was away OS except Anzac day. How else can I get VA WP!? ;)

Happy wife, Happy life!

Friends / Gurus

I made quite a coughoo last time, so here I am with (hopefully) a better redemption plan:

SYD BKK (TG F, 747)

BKK ZRH (TG F, A340)

ZRH IST (LX J, A320)

IST JRO (TK J, 737) - destination

*******

JRO ADD (ET J, Dash 8)

ADD LHR (ET J; 787)

LHR PEK (CA F; 777)

PEK SYD (CA J, A330)

45 min on Viber

160K and ~$USD250

I am putting this on hold for now to sleep on it.

There is no alternative to ET ex JRO at all, not a single TK outbound for a couple of days either side of the planned departure date.

Just hope the co-pilot does not do anything funny this time.

Any major issue that any of the gurus could see ??

Appreciate any feedback.

Thanks

ET is not a bad airline, don't worry about recent events. Waiting for a trip report on the 787 experience to LHR ;)

Hooray! Booked my first USDM redemption for me and the gf.

SYD-BKK TG J - (8 hr layover in F lounge)
BKK-CDG TG F (a380)- stopover
CDG-FRA-ATL-IAH LH J and UA J internal USA - destination
IAH-PHX-SFO US F (overnight transit)
SFO-ICN UA F
ICN-SYD OZ Y

saudi manage my booking showing seats as paid.

140k miles, $275 taxes + $50 service fee. Booked as 2 separate tickets and the share miles went through instantly which was an added bonus instead of having to put one ticket on hold. Total of 1 hr 15 on the phone.

bit disappointed the ICN-SYD J availability disappeared overnight but not sure it's worth adding another 15 hours to go via BKK in J from ICN.

stoked we got the flights considering the feedback and research I did and dates are set so fingers crossed no need for changes down the track!

anything else the pros out there might have changed? From reading up we had to go direct to CDG to stay under the 5 segments to destination (although I think the MPM for IAH got well and truly busted so perhaps rules have gone out the window), and I couldn't find a quicker option home (only alt. I found was CA with a long layover in Beijing)

That's an AWFUL long way to get to your destination - CDG-FRA-ATL-IAH! My partner was annoyed we had to take 5 flights to get SYD-KEF (I did point out it was one of the most remote airports in the world!)

Coming back I would probably go via BKK - ICN-SYD is an overnight flight and is going to be a pretty horrible end to the trip in Y, especially after coming off F (even if it is UA). I guess there was no OZ or NH F from LAX/SFO/IAH/IAD?

the only other option (if available) would be IAH-PEK on air china F followed by SYD with full flat beds. Great opportunity to visit Beijing (and it would be visa free entry if you hold an eligible passport).

Great opportunity to visit Beijing (and it would be visa free entry if you hold an eligible passport).

Just for context, "visa free entry" in this context refers to transit without visa, which is possible for transit less than 24 hours (I'm not sure if PRC has relaxed the time frames so you could stay a little longer, but for US DM rules on transit, the current rules would suffice anyway).

Never thought of trying to do part of Beijing within 24 hours (or less than that anyway).

Wow, it definitely is a long way =P And that OZ flight after coming off UA F ..... OMG!

Also just one long haul F BKK-CDG, I hope it's not the midnight departure as that would mean enjoying your caviar at 3am AEST :(

But hope you do make the most of it ...... as any excuse to go RTW is a good excuse :)

New article re entry to some ports in China from AusBT China: visa-free stopovers in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller

China's Transit Visa Exemption Program lets you spend 72 hours in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu or Chongqing without the hassle and cost of applying for a single-entry visa. It's a boon for business travellers flying through China: you'll have up to three days (and nights) for meetings, presentations and of course those lunches and dinners over which all-important personal relationships are forged. But there are a few things you need to know before you go.[h=3]Who qualifies?[/h]Any traveller with an Australian or New Zealand passport is eligible for the visa waiver – in fact, the program extends to citizens of 45 countries – as long as you're flying into Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing or Guangzhou.

Thai has screwed a reservation creating a mis connect with their rebooking and now US has screwed it by removing a segment when trying to fix it and now can't get it back! Some of these agents are hopeless, I am pretty sure it is possible to put the new segments in before removing or changing any others. I hate this back and forth of me now having to do the leg work with Thai, but I fully understand that this is one of the trade off's with these cheap tickets.
