Re: Best Status Run options after 1 July 2014

You'd think with all the people rorting the SYD-MEL Discount-Y 10SC earn each day, QF would have pulled out of this route by now...
They could end the rorting by reducing the SC earn to 5 SCs .

cough? Not sure how that helps - it diverts blood to the wrong part of the body! :p :p

Thanks for that Gold Member. Very interesting, though you've let yourself go with your lack of subtlety. Even a cadet can make sense of that one incredibly quickly. :)

Just needs a slight modification to apply something other than 0 to the caesar cipher. Why not implement a vigenere cipher with the key shared via PM? Or in fact I have another idea....

So, I have about 250k points this month burning a hole in my pocket. What's the best value FASA in SC terms? Should I route SYD-MEL-LHR or SYD-MEL-DXB-LHR (change # in DXB)? I can't make heads or tails of this brave new world. Travel will be after 1 July on new system.

I don't think there's any difference between the two in the New World.

I believe in the new system, splitting the flight number at DXB will not earn more than a direct right throu (it's the same).

If you have ways to do the other legs, a pretty efficient way to use up the points might be PER-MEL/SYD-LHR for 168,000 points if you can get the right person on the phone, and then 90,000 points for (say) HKG-SYD-MEL. Or possibly HKG-SYD-PER if you're Aadventurous enough.

AAdvantage would be good for the initial SYD-PER and possibly for LHR-HKG too. And then a cheap cash fare to get back to Sydney.

So for an Aadvantageous price you'd buy miles right? Haven't got into that yet but as QF is pushing me away I should really get into it!

Not sure about the LHR-HKG leg just now, but for the sake of example, a SYD-PER return in J will cost you 35,000AA + USD27.80.

35,000AA currently costs around USD930 to buy with cash, I think. So maybe a little over AUD1000 for a return in J? Not bad.

Seems like a lot of dollars just to position for 80 SCs each way...

It is. It was just intended as an example of (a) what AAdvantage tickets can cost and (b) how you can sometimes fly for fewer points (here 168,000 from PER rather than 192,000 from SYD, which might have made 90,000 from HKG another option with "about 250k points") by changing the starting city.

I don't think you'd be able to ticket PER-MEL-SYD-LHR or PER-SYD-MEL-LHR anyway, so you'd really only be making an extra 40SCs.

Really? How do you know this? I thought there was as difference between using a single flight number and dual...

The new system, as shown in this table via the link Frequent Flyer - Program - New Qantas and Jetstar Earning Table, gives, assuming SYD (or MEL) - DXB-LHR:
  • East Coast Australia to Dubai in First: 270 SCs
  • Dubai to Europe/UK in First: 150 SCs
  • Australia to Europe/UK in First: 420 SCs

The number of points earned is also the same in both cases under the new system.

The only real advantage of splitting the flight would be an extra squiggle (amongst some other possible esoteric benefits).

Thanks to Jessica for starting the stream and to the positive contributors. As a peasant who has to buy tickets post tax dollar, it is difficult for me to keep even SG.
I don't feel committed to fly QF metal as the last two times I have ticketed QF direct via their site to South America they have shunted me to LAN at least one way. Where is their loyalty.
Keep up the fight please

Hi genius ff's,
I'm a long time lurker, who has decided to post because I very much need some help. I'm heading to the states in a few weeks and would like to try an AA status run (sometime between May23- July 10) I don't think I can re qualify without it. I fly into LAX, and will be visiting family in TUS and BNA. However I need to go to BNA after 'simplification day.' I fly back to Oz from DFW.

I have been researching this for about a week and the best I can come up with is $2.80 per sc for a run. I haven't booked any of the USA flights yet, as I know that's not very good value from what I've read on here.

Can anyone help me out (pm please, I'm rubbish at codes, lol!) with some ideas? I think I've plugged in everything I can think of and more. Thank you so much in advance!

:)

Best bet would be to have a look on this thread for some info:

Hi Jess,
Thanks for responding. I luckily have a USA billing address, and have booked on the aa.com site crediting to qantas before, no problems at all.

I suppose what I'm after is some suggested city pairs to try. Or how do I figure out which city pairs to try?

I've sunk hours and hours and hours into random guess and check, and I'm close to giving up. I'm happy to show my attempted city combinations with anyone willing to point me in the right direction. I am trying! Lol :)

Sorry for my newb-ness.

Under the current SC values, almost any (AA/US) P fare from LAX/SFO-(DFW transit)-BWI/PHL/BOS would yield 240 SC. And the cost would be in the range of US$500-600 with advance purchase. So under US$2.50 per SC. I find the US segments much more expensive than AA. And all have (varying) advance purchase requirements.

Note BOS-DFW at 1562 miles (per gcmap) will be difficult (though probably not impossible) for QF to get under their new 1500 zone limit.

Be creative while wandering

I managed to snag a P fare from SEA to PHL (via DFW) for $479 in early April for travel in mid May. It was quite a good deal as the costs to travel via ORD is the same as DFW and results in 30 less SCs. So the cost is US$1.99 per SC.
