China travel bans from Late 2022

Add UK and France to the list:

Both countries have announced they will require travellers from China to provide a negative COVID-19 test result within 48 hours of departure. France is also reintroducing mask requirements on flights from China to France.

Spain pushing for an EU-wide common approach.

So it seems some countries require a negative PCR before boarding the flight, and others are testing on arrival. But I cant find any report on what happens to those with a positive result on arrival. No compulsory quarantine, do they really expect those infected tourists to isolate in the hotel rooms and that they won’t venture out ?

Now UK is doing the same now

It's annoying how some medical people are using the argument that this is racial discrimination. It isn't. It's anyone who gets on a plane from China. And we know there are many expats living in China. They too need testing. My concern is that other countries whom we wish to travel to will put Australian flights into the same category if we don't follow suit and we will need the PCR test.

I agree... the worst is that with the current info we have, half the plane is positive... I wonder will it be full plane load positive in the next day or 2??

Annoying that some medical people are basing their comments on science rather than pushing the agenda you’d like them to?

Where is that info?

In the BBC article the medical opinion to test was universal as far as I could tell.

The only issue for determination was whether to test before departure or on arrival.

If they are calling the race card as a reason for not testing then there's no science is there?

Here's an interesting article from the UK Telegraph, via today's SMH.

Suggests to me that next year will be "interesting" from a commercial aviation point of view, and may not lead to airfares falling significantly anytime soon.

Add to that the additional testing regimes being set up around the world (with the notable exception of Oz - for obvious political reasons) and you'd have to be pretty optimistic to expect cheaper fares in that environment.

But who knows? We shall see...

(I've got 6 OS trips booked for 2023 so far - will be interesting to see if they all happen).

Actually it said the complete opposite:

Prof Andrew Pollard, chairman of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), said the restrictions are unlikely to prevent new Covid variants reaching the UK and it was difficult to know what impact such a move would have here.
He told BBC News: "Trying to ban a virus by adjusting what we do with travel has already been shown not to work very well.
"We've seen that with the bans on travel from various countries during the pandemic, that hasn't stopped those viruses travelling around the world eventually."

There are a lot of claims that half the population will be “infected” by the end of December. Give it a few weeks for the other half… doesn’t that mean it’ll be as good as over in 4 weeks? Will be interesting to see how quickly these countries dial back their panicked testing measures.

Per capita, australia was probably about the same a year ago. But the xenophobes around the world weren’t attacking us.

Chinas biggest mistake was waiting a year too long. We wouldn’t have even heard about it otherwise.

This is all very silly. China is just going through the same thing EU, Australia and many others went through a year ago.

It's their fault for dragging their feet for so long, but it's no reason to institute some kind of border closures or testing - why travel back in time?

The rest of the world has been through Delta and omicron and we have come out the other side. For most people now kovid is relatively mild.

We have no idea what is going to come out of China with so many people infected in such a short time and the possible mutations that might arise.

How come such countries as USA, UK, OZ and NZ, where Covid is rife, aren't also required to have pre-departure tests?

PS NZ also has no requirements for pre-depature tests from ANY country.

Actually we do have a pretty good idea: China Has No New Covid Variants as Sequencing Efforts Strengthen

All this stuff about strange new variants is just scaremongering put about by people who are driven by a Sinophobic agenda.

Yep, it’s pretty embarrassing really. The covid lovers will latch onto anything possible, and now they’re basically supporting political discrimination of a country the west has an issue with. Absolutely disgusting.

I think I understand where you come from as to why no pre-departure tests in these countries, but they aren't required not because of double standards, but it is because these countries have vaccines that are proven to work compared to the Chinese made ones - and that's why the Chinese people are coming to HK and Macau to get the Pfizer vaccine as well

I must agree with this statement, not because out of malice of mainland china.. yes i do have some bias against china, but in this case, variants do mutate and with a high degree of virus to come out of lockdown... who knows what can happen - even at Victoria's worst lockdown, we never had the swamp of people needing hospital care that the hospital system went into complete meltdown and the city in chaos.
