Limited Offer: Upgrade from Economy

My flights are too far in the future, so I can't request an upgrade yet. I imagine that by the time I can, the offer will be closed.

Yes, got it, for MEL-AKL in April. Trouble is there are two of us travelling (can we both upgrade?), and more importantly, our flight has been re-timed for 4hrs 20mins earlier, and we'd prefer to transfer to the later flight. Very unlikely to accept the offer in any case.

Why don't you fly Jetstar? You might get lucky and have the non-reclining flight
.... which is delayed by 11 hours and then cancelled. ;)

I have been lucky on most QF flights recently with bulkhead and I would not swap a bulkhead for a QFF point upgrade to any higher class. I think it is time to try and get a BD business class award on SQ or TG and a VS premium economy/upper class award later in the year.

I've got the offer and now it is a hard decision if I want to use it for SYD-SIN.

It is worth mention that last time a similar offer was made all flights could be upgraded. Also anyone wanting to upgrade a normally non upgradable flight should get online to check if the system allows the upgrade to be requested.

I have not received the email however after checking my booking in a few months time it now says the date that I can request the upgrade whereas before it clearly stated that my booking was not eligible to request an upgrade.

Thanks for that little piece of information medhead. ;)

Haven't got the email (yet) but it will allow me to upgrade ADL-SYD tomorrow. Can't be bothered to be honest on that one, row 4 is good enough and I've had a few 73H's turn into 734's lately so don't trust my luck mostly.

Can't check w/ INT segments since all my current bookings are in J or F.

How often does this occur? I can only remember the last two times, the last not long ago. In the larger term, is this more frequent than previously?

Yes.
Just before X-Mas last year.
SYD-BNE. I didn't take the offer and was glad because the seats were the same as economy, middle seat empty :shock::shock: (single aisle 73H..?)

Yeah, J on a 734 - I feel bad sitting directly behind anyone who's paid even slightly from their own dime. Besides a bit better food it is completely the same product. Same lounge access and all being emerald.

Actually I had BNE-SYD during that last offer and went for it, but then I was on QF20 so knew it would be an 333 w/ skybed and at worst back to a 763 w/ dreamtime.

Just more evidence that the premium market is a bit sluggish right now?

Has anyone who had such an offer in the past had any luck at upgrading? I had a similar offer in '09 for a flight ex-SIN and I can't remember the exact details but something odd happened to the request about 48 hours out. Told when I checked my booking class wasn't eligible for upgrades or some such story. J cabin was only about 2/3 full. I've become a little cynical, it's all very well making these sort of offers, but very easy for them to decline the upgrade with no transparency!

I got the email but wouldn't consider using it unless SCs were earned in the upgrade class. AND if it wasn't for a short SYD-CBR route! ;)

Agreed wingspan. Upgrade on this route will be the biggest waste of points...

Anybody think its worth it to upgrade SYD-DRW on a 737? 4hr40min flight for 16000 miles

I'm not going to request an upgrade on a 737 MEL-AKL, which is ~3:40, but 4:40 is certainly IMO getting well into the ball park! Sorry, have to leave that one to you. :p:D

Actually, if I can handle 3:40 in Y, I can probably handle 4:40, so probably I wouldn't upgrade, but I would fully understand if you wished to do so (and I have used points to travel J to NZ - it's so much nicer. :) )

I got it last time... LAX-SYD I think...

Just checked all of my (and OH's) bookings... our international segments are now upgradable, though our emails only offered domestic upgrades...

Sorry to put out the question as neither of my legs have J seats available anyway, maybe next time...

Thinking that 32,000 points is too much to ask for Brisbane Auckland return in J as its a relatively short flight.... would anyone take this offer?

Yes I would , upgrades are IMHO the best use of points, difference in catering alone is night and day
YMMV

32k + the $200-$400 you've already paid is a bit rich, especially as it's most likely a 737-400.

However if you don't have lounge access then it's certainly worth it.

As PF says, the difference (even on an old aircraft) is night and day.

I didn't get the email either, but upon checking online I was able to request an upgrade to my 'red e deal' PER-CBR-PER flights this week...
Quite chuffed actually! - Another great reward for being a reader of AFF!

I/we got the offer for MEL-SIN and HKG-MEL in March and April. Only problem is that you must apply for all travelling people. We have five travelling so that is 200,000 points in each direction.
