Limited Offer: Upgrade from Economy

Our upcoming six flights during March-May PER-ADL/MEL vv are upgradeable as per the email; the trouble is that 16K QFF points x 2, 3 or 4 pax per sector mounts up very quickly! OTOH, our bookings for SYD-DFW return in Oct/Nov are not yet upgradeable. 50K points per pax per sector and J seats on PE sale fares means that temptation is easy to resist anyway! :)

E Mail from QF to upgrade to Y+ or J

I've had a couple of phone calls from QF on previous overseas flights asking if I want to upgrade to Y+, but I've never had an email until today.
I got the offer to upgrade from a very cheap Y fare to Y+ for 25,000 points or to J for 55,000 points. (LAX-SYD)
Are these emails terribly common?
I've opted for the Y+ U/G as I want to keep some points for another trip to the US later in the year.
Interestingly, it also offered me a J upgrade for the domestic leg SYD-ADL, but when I said yes, it came back and said there were no upgrades available

Anybody think its worth it to upgrade SYD-DRW on a 737? 4hr40min flight for 16000 miles

Everyone has a different value on their points so to one person it might be worth it but to another it may not.

Up to you really.

I also received this email for a SYD-MEL return in March, I would rather save the points for international upgrades I think. I can survive quite well in domestic Y for the 1 hour flight.

I do wonder why QF are doing this - do they want people to burn points at the moment or are premium bookings looking light? Or perhaps a combination of both?

Got the e-mail for for my flights SYD-BNE-SYD this weekend to upgrade from the red-e deal, not worth burning the points for a short flight but a nice gesture by QF.

Some will say it is worth it others will say it is not worth it. I don't think it is worth it and it is only a 737.

Thinking that 32,000 points is too much to ask for Brisbane Auckland return in J as its a relatively short flight.... would anyone take this offer?
If you are earning more QFF points than you can spend then it is a good offer. On the other hand if QFF points are hard to come by then best to save them for a rainy day.

The annoying thing about this promotion is that it chews up seats that would otherwise be available as award flights.

It would be better if QF had a different fare bucket (ie like AA) for Business Class Redemptions and a separate one for Business Class Upgrades.

Red Roo - are you listening?

Well it's not, becuase these upgrades are still only confirmed up to 5 hours before departure?

There are a few things about this offer that have me flummoxed.
First off, my wife got the email and I did not. She is a FF member, I am a Q Club Member, so I would have understood if it was the other way around.
So, I rang QFF and asked if they could send me the email. No, they could not. But they did suggest to me that this offer might also apply to Premium as well as Business.
The offer can only be accessed on-line. So, she has to do it, I can't.
The other thing is, she has only enough points for a few selected upgrades, while I have about 50 percent more than her. We will have to do a points transfer somewhere along the line.
One more thing. Last time I flew to the USA with the wife and kids, I got a phonecall 14 days out, offering me an upgrade for points. It was a better deal that I would normally get, so I took it and we went Business. I feel like Qantas has forgotten me; perhaps it thinks that I have been seeing another airline behind its back...

I got the offer for my trans tasman flights over Easter. Not worth it for the trans tasman J product.

Have you checked the bookings in your account and tried requesting some upgrades? My partner is a NB on way to silver and he's got the email also.

Yeah I looked at that, but the numbers are bigger.
I got quoted 45K to upgrade to Prem and 72K to Business when I rang. They seems to want a lot more than that on the website.
Like I said, I am flummoxed.

That's really strange. Aren't the number of points required for each upgrade all standardised, based on zones?

Like I said, I am flummoxed. I was under the impression that there was one rule in play in this.
It is possible that the gentleman in the call centre made an error, particularly since he had already emphasised that he was unable to perform any upgrades, or applications for them, and that they had to be done online. He may have been looking at a different sector.

If the website is letting you request an upgrade in non upgradable fares then you got the offer regardless of the email situation.
In terms of the cost: What is the route? What is the normal upgrade cost for that route? It sounds like they are 2 of you traveling, are you sure the points cost quoted isn't for both of you? It is normal that both people must upgrade.

For international upgrades yes. But I thought domestic upgrades were confirmed immediately?

Correct, it is confirmed immediately. But the other comment was saying that this would be taking away classic award fares which doesn't. Especially on domestic. Nearly always can purchase a J fare on a classic dom flight?

Possibly a combination of both but at the same time I feel QF wants people to burn their QFF points.

Similar to offering Any Seat Awards for the cost of a Classic Award. Throw in a few SCs and people are jumping out of their skin to use their QFF points.
