Limited Offer: Upgrade from Economy

Correct, it is confirmed immediately. But the other comment was saying that this would be taking away classic award fares which it clearly doesn't. Especially on domestic. Nearly always can purchase a J fare on a classic dom flight?

I'm not sure how it works exactly. I just had the impression that there had to be U fares available to get an upgrade confirmed immediately. I recently tried with a couple of upgradable domestic fares and was rejected, iirc there was plenty of J, D and I fares showing for those flights.

I also had the experience of requesting an upgrade on a full flexible fare, being rejected but then being offered an upgrade when using the check in kiosk. This was 2 years ago and a domestic flight.

Sorry i thought you were mainily commenting on international flights.
For Dom flights AFAIK it is based in that U fare class for the upg to Business (unless they are freeing up more seats for this class). But i thought there generally was lots of those fare types available on nearly all flights (talking about MEL-SYD-BNE-PER-ADL)?
Don't really use FF points, just see it from sold fare classes and avail fare classes.

As for this promo travel is generally very quiet around FEB/MAR/APR.

I do wonder why QF are doing this - do they want people to burn points at the moment or are premium bookings looking light? Or perhaps a combination of both?

Programmed to obfuscate the DJ announcement?

Thanks for posting this! We had no non-upgradeable flights booked (all Y+ or dome already upgraded), but for our big trp with the ILs we've been able to request upgrades for them. Of course, the upgtades may not happen, but at least we can request them. :)

i am not sure what to make of this deal-and feel like it has forced my hand to request an upgrade when maybe an op-up was on the cards...

i am flying QF93 mel-lax this weekend in an apparently quite oversold flight, i was hoping for the chance of a first ever international op-up but with this offer coming out that prospect went from a slim chance to a zero chace (i think) - points request seemed the only way to go.

fingers crossed for a result :)

Gotta say I have the opposite opinion. The premium cabins are empty and it seems likely that op-ups will be required, so they make the offer in the hope that people take it up and they then get some value from the points redeemed instead of giving out free seats.

Then again I have weird ideas.

my fingers are crossed for you as well

I think Winston's train of thought is: enough people will take up the offer than an Op-Up will no longer be given to him. Or, enough people will take up the offer, plus Op-Ups will go to those on upgradeable fares, so that an Op-Up will no longer be given to him.

I think I meant my response is the opposite to Winston's, it doesn't make me want to take up the offer. IMO it indicates a slightly better than slim chance of an op-up, since they are trying to get people to spend points. If no one puts in for the upgrade then they still need to give out freebies. If people do take the offer then I'm still where I expected to sit. Either way I still have my points and I have played the lotto for free. ;)

I did not recieve any emails about this but I was playing around with a couple of my domestic bookings for March and April to Dawrin and have managed to get upgrades to business class using some of my points.;)

Re: E Mail from QF to upgrade to Y+ or J

I've had a couple of phone calls from QF on previous overseas flights asking if I want to upgrade to Y+, but I've never had an email until today.
I got the offer to upgrade from a very cheap Y fare to Y+ for 25,000 points or to J for 55,000 points. (LAX-SYD)
Are these emails terribly common?
I've opted for the Y+ U/G as I want to keep some points for another trip to the US later in the year.
Interestingly, it also offered me a J upgrade for the domestic leg SYD-ADL, but when I said yes, it came back and said there were no upgrades available

Looks like the upgrade came through 26 hours early! I'm currently shown in Y and Y+ - only problem is that I prefer a window and there are no windows showing in Y+ as available (QF108, Feb 26). Oh well, I guess I'll cope.

Congratulations FlyboyAl :) I do enjoy Y+

You seem to have been flying to the States a lot eh. One time on QF94, my seatmate in the J cabin told me that he travelled to San Francisco every 2 weeks.

Great news...Mrs Pyffii and I have both been upgraded to J for tomorrows Auckland Sydney flight...Guess the seats will be much better than the Jet Connect Y seats :)

Decided to take advantage of this on SFO-SYD tomorrow as I recently rediscovered how horrible long-haul whY is on a 744.

Was scheduled to be OJS (which apparently is sitting at SFO), so snagged 1A.

But EF is now showing an OJB/OJI 2x2 J config in zone A :(

Although, I have no idea where OJB/OJI are..??

I flew OJI from NRT on QF22 landing into SYD yesterday morning.

Probably a flow on from the issues QF had in LAX two days ago with OEB-OJQ and OEF all having tech problems, along with a two classer back on the PER-SIN run (OJD)

And I managed to get an upgrade to J on the SYD-ADL but that was for other reasons, and a good PR move by Qantas

I think OJI operated SYD-SFO yesterday, so it may be there as well!

Well I'm looking out the window of the lounge at OJI which flew QF73 yesterday. And apparently OJS flew QF74 as scheduled, so not sure who I was supposed to have, but obviously LAX replacements had priority.

I'm sure I can suffer in 16A ;)
