Platinum Card, what will I get for $900

You do get the Reserve card for $0 with the platinum charge card.

It's also worth noting that you are eligible for current signup bonuses on the Plat Reserve card (according to Amex CS people anyway), even if it's the complementary-with-Platinum-card version, as long as you signup online.

Pretty good deal - means you're actually getting a minimum of 105,000 MR points (75,000 + 30,000) for signing up for a Plat charge card at the moment. Can potentially be more too: signing up for the Plat charge using a friend-referral attracts 80,000 MR points instead of 75,000 (so 110k total), and I also had one Amex CS person tell me you can get both the friend-referral 80,000 and the online-signup 75,000 at the moment, although I'm sceptical of that.

WOW didnt know that was a perk of this card. But is it like the velocity where you are paying for very overpriced J tickets already therefore 2 for 1 is not much of a deal?

Not necessarily. I've had J class return JAL flights SYD-LAX via Tokyo for $5400 per person. The JAL website price at the time was $18,000 per person, and Qantas was over $10k.

I was also quoted around $5k per person on Etihad to Europe but didn't end up going at the time.

They have companion fares on CX, SQ, BA, JL, DL, VA, EY and maybe one or two others.

Were those prices before or after the 2-for-1 offer?

The JAL $5400 was the price we paid per person, but they are companion fares not strictly 2-for-1. Officially the website says they offer up to 31% saving, but I actually saved more. Centurion card the savings are up to 46% so closer to 2-for-1.

Righto, thanks for clarifying.

I do not think you are correct.

If you only pay for Plat..and get the Plat CC complimentary then no extra points for the comp card.

You only get the extra points if you pay the yearly fee for both.
speaking of which my sign-on points for my paid Edge Card have not yet posted...so time to call them.

Slightly different situation but my partner previously had a Qantas Ultimate card and asked to cancel so they offered to downgrade to the free Qantas Discovery card (that was before it was publicly available when they still had the silver Qantas card for a fee). When the Discovery card was activated and we spent the required amount we still received the bonus points even though it was not technically a new account. So it's possible in this case it might still happen.

I had two different Platinum CS people say or imply that the signon bonus applies... I was sceptical too but they seemed to be pretty sure.

First time was when I rang up to get the application form for the complementary Plat Reserve card posted to me - CS person advised I apply online as it was easier and that way "I'd get the bonus points". Second time was when I rang up to activate the card - CS person was looking up details of the application to check the correct fee waiver code had been applied, and asked if I'd applied online "to get the bonus points". I requeried both and both said the sign up bonus applied - both knew it was the complementary card as well.

Anyway, I'll find out for sure in the next few weeks - will post back the results.

Wonder if i can get the bonus if i already hold the plat edge, then eventually having the reserve and charge as well LOL

Your partner may have been lucky. I also rang up to cancel the Ultimate card and they offered me the Discovery which I decided to take up, however I didn't get the sign up bonus points on offer.

Edit - I also made the qualifying spend required, but still no bonus points.

Well I can only go by my own experience. Both my wife and I have Plats with comp Reserves. We both gained 80K and no more.

I gained an extra 40 K when she joined up under the refer a friend campaign. She joined in Jan.

If what you were tol is correct then the rules have changed.

Correct, I should have specified that I was talking about Delta airlines from here to the USA, but generally the savings are about 30%+

Is that booking through the AMEX service it self? are those rare occasions tho? or fairly frequent as long as booking far out enough...?
