Re: No Squiggle!

Am I missing something - if you don't earn a squiggle then it is only limited value to getting to P1 which was one of the touted benefits. I think what most of the naysayers are on about is while it is some benefit it is for a limited time, only applies to X bookings and doesn't earn miles so while it is better than nothing the trumpeting accompanying the announcement was probably a bit over the top for what is basically a slight improvement with a bunch of conditions.

Considering you only need 4 squiggles (flights required), its only a minor thing.

It's a bit like the line in that song ........ " It's like a free ride when you've already paid "

So having read 240+ posts, it seems to me that it is a benefit for some, maybe not for others. As is often pointed out on this forum, we are all different with different needs, wants, points balances and incomes.

For +1 & I, we were looking at an RTW or two over the next couple of years. One trip in J or two in Y; that was the question! This promotion makes the decision a little more interesting.

If I am reading it correctly, as long as we are on a QF flight number, including codeshares, then we get the SCs. It will be interesting to see what itineraries work and which don't; plus availability.

Um, so I just called up to attempt to book a JASA and was told that as of yesterday the booking system is now COMPLETELY different, and to fly SYD>ADL>PER on a JASA would cost 60,000 points plus a copay of about $300 (the equivalent Classic is 36,000 + $82, and as of a few days ago the same flight as a JASA was going for 36,000 + $300ish). JASAs, unlike Classics, apparently now take into account all the different sectors so the booking engine views it as a SYD>ADL flight plus an ADL>PER one and charges the appropriate points for that...

So this could be a somewhat (majorly) negative effect of the booking engine change.

I really hope I'm wrong, and I'll be the first to admit I'm not experienced with mASAs, but I talked to the guy for a long time and supervisors were involved! If anyone can shed any light on this, I'd appreciate it. Sorry if this is off-topic, but it seems to be a direct result of the booking engine change!

I had a similar situation just last week when I tried to book a return mASA flight SYD-MEL-ADL with the points cost being higher than SYD-ADL. Ended up taking the direct flight and paid the classic rate just means I get 20 less SC. No big deal.

FWIW - I would go for two trips over one.

Flights are good but holidays are better!

Re: No Squiggle!

It's funny how some members here will only see the worst in anything, even a genuine enhancement like this! Talk about pessimistic...

<snip>

Great deal. Thankyou Qantas.

*Evidence suggests the taxes on these are still somewhat reasonable, making them still very, very good value.

Sure, and some here will never have a bad word to say about Qantas and are simply gushing in their praise for this promotion. Talk about one-eyed ... (just kidd'n)

So, you say this is an "genuine enhancement"? So you think its genuinely crook, do you?

Seriously, the promotion is fine taken in isolation. But when you think that the permanent dropping of mASAs from the web site, and the continuing call-up fiasco are all part of this web site restructure, and this promotion is short term and pretty restrictive, I don't think Qantas customers are in front overall. But by all means enjoy the sweeties that Alan spreads about, for the short period that they last.

I think it has been well established by now how furious you are at Qantas. Why put yourself through it?

Re: No Squiggle!

I think this is a great move by Qantas. why are people lambasting it? we got no SC's before but now we do (at least on economy flight).

Re: No Squiggle!

From ABT : As to the fate of what Qantas calls 'marginal Any Seat Awards' – these being Any Seat Award bookings which can be purchased at the same rate as Classic Award seats – Tully said "these are still available and we have no plans to remove these."

Typically made for travel in business and first class, these represent some of the better-value Any Seat Awards because they provide benefits such as a full serve of Qantas points and status credits; however, these remain available only by calling the Qantas call centre.

Re: No Squiggle!

Is this promotion targeted? Both myself and the mrs haven't received this email :( I'm 65xx_xx and she's 82xx_xx

Re: No Squiggle!

Sorry it doesn't appear to available to NZ members. I just tried a dummy booking AKL-LHR next year and Ts&cs say no SCs. Haven't received the email either, QFF 18xx_xx. cheers

They say that for my dummy bookings too.

Re: No Squiggle!

Is this like the stupidest promotion QF has ever run? Hey spend your points on the worst classic awards, pay the all the taxes and get the lowest amount of Status credits available!

Well i looked at a ASA CBR-SYD-CBR for tomorrow, last night. The Classic award with points being used to pay the taxes was about 10k less than the ASA award. The difference is i'll earn 2,000 points on 20 SCs on the ASA and on the classic i'll get the 20SC's and effectively save 8,000 points. (I don't recall reading that FF points would be awarded, just SC's)

So despite the people who complain they can never get flights with points (usually families who want to travel in school holidays), I got my CBR-SYD-CBR flight last night for Saturday with no problems. Well would have prefered the only 2 flights with no classic awards, but the ones either side are fine.

Not the greatest use of points ever, but I know I'll need that 20 points to keep status, as i think after next months CBR-SYD-AKL-SCL-LPB SCL-AKL-MEL-CBR, i'll still be just short of retaining lowly silver. No work trips this year has made it hard work!

You are correct. It is not available to anyone from NZ. All future discounts/offers/promotions are never to be offered to anyone from NZ, ever again.

Re: No Squiggle!

Hi all - apologies if this question has already been asked (and answered), but does anyone know if the offer matches SCs to the seat class you book? For example, if I book a J-class CBR-MEL via Classic Awards, does it earn me 40 SCs, or just the minimum SCs you get for Discount Y (10 SCs)?

Thanks everyone!

Two trips will be better. You will easily forget the flights but the places visited are going to remain you for a lifetime.

Neither, it will earn zero SC booked as a classic award in J

Re: No Squiggle!

In the present QF sale (about to end but no doubt to be repeated if history is any judge) I can buy CNS-SYD-CNS for c$320.00. That applies for the entire first half of 2014. I can also get a classic award for 36K points and c$100 co-payment. On both I'll earn 40 SCs but on the first I'll also earn a couple of thousand points. As I value 38K points at considerably more than $220 I'll be declining the new offer.

As I said earlier, it depends on the individual's situation. For those with heaps of points, it may be attractive; for those with lots of money, it isn't. For most of us (with few points and even less $)........bugger. JV
