I was in Cairo in the early eighties and returning to our hotel in Talat Harb Street noticed there were flyers wanting caucasian males to be extras in an Australian film being shot there in a couple of weeks time. Food would be provided and expenses would be paid, iirc about $25 US a day, which would have been a reasonable amount then.
Unfortunately we had visas for Sudan that expired soon so we needed to be heading south and I was with my girl friend at the time and females weren't required so we decided to forget about it. Later on in the Sudan and Kenya we bumped into people wearing what appeared to be slouch hats and found out the film was Gallipoli and aparently those that took part had a great experience.
When we finally got to see the film we recognised some of the people we had met, in particular an American named Big John in the Aussie Rules game in the desert, I could have been famous!
