Oh for the days up until the mid-late 90's where all a QP member needed to be doing for access was "Flying Qantas that Day".
Well, have finally received an email from QF about this. Talk about taking their time

Yep,they even admitted it.Simple answer: cutting costs.
Until about 6 years ago, QP bars in the larger airports did not open until 3pm; it did change to 1pm around 2003 and then to Noon roughly 3 years ago.
BTW, Since their opening in 2008, Domestic J lounge bars have opened at noon.
The Qantas Club, which costs $775 to join, had served complimentary alcohol from noon, but has pushed back the service as the global economic downturn put a squeeze on margins.
Qantas spokeswoman Olivia Wirth said the move was part of a review of operations and would affect all national domestic airport clubs.
`We looked at redesigning and modifying those offerings that have a lower demand and this is one of them,'' she said.

Right. So what they're essentially saying is that most people weren't drinking at those times that were affected by the cut so they've decided to scale back on it?
I don't get that - I would have thought all around Australia most QPs/domestic J lounges would be loaded with patrons eager to have the bar open.
What I don't really get about this is (I'm a bit thick)is that it's not as if they make any cash out of the sale of alcohol in the QP anyway do they?,after all isn't the whole basis of the story in the link that I published that they give complimentary alcohol? So if the GFC means that people are not flying as much then doesn't that mean they would be serving less complimentary alcohol which surely would mean that their costs would drop anyway?.
There is no self serve white wine available in the Perth QP at present, its a case of joining the safety vest beer line.
Apparently the cost cuts extend beyond the white wine. I just asked for a G&T and the response was "sorry, we have no spirits as the bar is being refurbished". I asked how long that was going on and she said "another three weeks". Hmmm, there was no mention of reduced services in the email from Qantas in January outlining the renovations. Interesting. How hard can it be to put a few bottles of spirits at the temporary bar?

What a load of equine excrement - it is much easier to maintain a few bottles of spirits at room temperature, than to keep a fridge full of beers that need more space, power etc.
Glad I almost always fly out of PER on the first flight of the day, so the bar question is moot - would be most miffed if I couldn't get the customary Chivas before a late flight.
QF had better watch themselves here, the availability of spirits is one of the few advantages that the QP has over the Lounge.
The staff at the PER QP are quite possibly the worst of any of the QF domestic QP's.
I've had one threaten to cut me off because I asked for a neat scotch and a scotch and dry (I'm sure i've ranted about it here before). The Bar Dragons look at you as if to say 'you don't belong here' (back when I was 23 or so and a QP member) and they have that look of resentment in their eyes.
And based on feedback people have left about bad service in-flight, i'm sure QF won't pay much attention to a visibly disgruntled staff member working at the PER QP.

I have to agree, the PER dragons are by far the worst in any lounge I've visited domestically in Australia.
