QP Perth Renovations

Oh for the days up until the mid-late 90's where all a QP member needed to be doing for access was "Flying Qantas that Day".

Well, have finally received an email from QF about this. Talk about taking their time

I just received it again, but this time entitled "Important information about your flight" and had the booking reference for the trip I did last week.....

..or for the very old days where, at least with Golden Wing, you could access any time. :):)

Simple answer: cutting costs.

Until about 6 years ago, QP bars in the larger airports did not open until 3pm; it did change to 1pm around 2003 and then to Noon roughly 3 years ago.

BTW, Since their opening in 2008, Domestic J lounge bars have opened at noon.
Yep,they even admitted it.
Qantas Club's cut push back alcohol service hours | Perth Now
The Qantas Club, which costs $775 to join, had served complimentary alcohol from noon, but has pushed back the service as the global economic downturn put a squeeze on margins.

Qantas spokeswoman Olivia Wirth said the move was part of a review of operations and would affect all national domestic airport clubs.

`We looked at redesigning and modifying those offerings that have a lower demand and this is one of them,'' she said.

Right. So what they're essentially saying is that most people weren't drinking at those times that were affected by the cut so they've decided to scale back on it?

I don't get that - I would have thought all around Australia most QPs/domestic J lounges would be loaded with patrons eager to have the bar open.

They are. It's just an excuse that they're using that has no ounce of truth.

What I don't really get about this is (I'm a bit thick)is that it's not as if they make any cash out of the sale of alcohol in the QP anyway do they?,after all isn't the whole basis of the story in the link that I published that they give complimentary alcohol? So if the GFC means that people are not flying as much then doesn't that mean they would be serving less complimentary alcohol which surely would mean that their costs would drop anyway?.

If you've ever been in a Qantas Pub, the 'less flying' argument becomes obviously invalid. So much so, the MEL QP has 'crowd control' measures (think check-in queue barriers) for punters to line up for their booze. They tend to only put one staff member on at a time too.

It was an obvious cost cutting measure to stop people drinking their precious profits before 2pm. The bar is always busy in the QP, less so in the J Lounges, but they're a lot smaller.

The self-serve wine bar also cut down on the need for staff at the bar. It's all about dollars.

There is no self serve white wine available in the Perth QP at present, its a case of joining the safety vest beer line.

Apparently the cost cuts extend beyond the white wine. I just asked for a G&T and the response was "sorry, we have no spirits as the bar is being refurbished". I asked how long that was going on and she said "another three weeks". Hmmm, there was no mention of reduced services in the email from Qantas in January outlining the renovations. Interesting. How hard can it be to put a few bottles of spirits at the temporary bar?

I suppose the staff on duty should be the same and there might in fact be less pax in the lounge so there’d be no reason to remove spirits for ease of service (as presumably it takes longer to make a G&T than pour a beer.

What a load of equine excrement - it is much easier to maintain a few bottles of spirits at room temperature, than to keep a fridge full of beers that need more space, power etc.

Glad I almost always fly out of PER on the first flight of the day, so the bar question is moot - would be most miffed if I couldn't get the customary Chivas before a late flight.

QF had better watch themselves here, the availability of spirits is one of the few advantages that the QP has over the Lounge.

The staff at the PER QP are quite possibly the worst of any of the QF domestic QP's.

I've had one threaten to cut me off because I asked for a neat scotch and a scotch and dry (I'm sure i've ranted about it here before). The Bar Dragons look at you as if to say 'you don't belong here' (back when I was 23 or so and a QP member) and they have that look of resentment in their eyes.

And based on feedback people have left about bad service in-flight, i'm sure QF won't pay much attention to a visibly disgruntled staff member working at the PER QP.

Drewbles, I have found the staff at the QP to have been very helpful and happy at the PER dom lounge.

They were more than happy for me to guest my partner in even though all the signage was clear that it was not permitted. Even the staff inside and at the temp lounge were all very cheery and happy to be there, which my partner pointed out.

In saying that I have been lucky to not have had a bad experience yet so touch wood;)

I have to agree, the PER dragons are by far the worst in any lounge I've visited domestically in Australia.

I have always found the front desk dragons to be very nice and helpful, however the staff looking after the food and cleaning the lounge seem to have an issue with servicing the needs of customers in a timely and polite fashion.

I thought the MEL T1 dragons were pretty bad myself (well they aren't rude, just really boring and unwelcoming); I sent an email to QF about this (and got acknowledged of its receipt the other day!)

I don't have a large enough sample size, but I haven't had a lot of tussles with the PER staff (in my experiences, they are usually quite nice). Never tried the bar staff.

They do have some strange rules at PER that I have not encountered over east.

The last time I got the red eye to SYD ( the week bfore the renos started) my request for a double Chivas was met with "sorry, we don't serve double shots" - however the genuinely sympathetic bar lady the offered me 2 separate single shots. I accepted gladly, poured one glass into the other and returned satisfied to my seat!
